Alex Whitty

Captain of MY NAIA

I have navigated worldwide for over two decades, amassing a diverse range of experiences across commercial vessels, private and charter yachts, cruise ships, and cargo ships. I would love to say that from a young age, I was drawn to the sea, fascinated by the vastness and the promise of adventure that lay beyond the horizon and that this passion led to a distinguished career in the maritime industry. But this would not be true.  An interesting series of events and a lack of connection with mainstream education in fact led me to where I am now.

For over a decade, I have been a prominent figure in the superyacht sector, where the challenges and rewards of commanding large yachts have honed my leadership abilities. Since 2017, I have proudly served as a captain.  I love to have the opportunity to foster cohesive and motivated crews.
One of the hallmarks of my leadership style is my ability to harmonize the diverse skills and personality traits of my crew. Believing that a happy and well-integrated team is key to a successful voyage, I prioritize building a robust leadership structure across all departments. This commitment to fostering a positive onboard environment has consistently garnered praise from guests and management, creating a reputation for delivering exceptional service and experiences.
Throughout my career, I have achieved some real highs. In the 2019/20 season, I was honoured with the ‘A-Crew: Superyacht Captain of the Year’ award in the Master Unlimited category, a recognition of my leadership style and dedication to the maritime profession. Equally rewarding was seeing my Chief Officer earn the ‘A-Crew: Superyacht Chief Officer of the Year’ award, a success that highlights my commitment to mentorship and team development.
One of the most poignant moments in my career was the rescue of a man lost at sea for 11 hours. The operation earned the ‘A-Crew: Duty of Care Award’ and stands as a remarkable testament to the skill and dedication of my entire crew. This rescue remains a defining moment for me in my career and it is the best thing I have ever achieved and not an achievement I did alone.
Exploration and adventure are at the heart of my professional journey. Among my many adventures, planning and executing a season in Antarctica stands out as a significant career highlight. Navigating the icy waters and overcoming the unique challenges of this remote region required meticulous planning and expertise.
I try to help and mentor those that I work with as well as some that I don’t.  I try to give back as much as I can to build and develop the new generation of yacht crews.
