Kayla van den Bergh

Ever since I can remember, I’ve had a deep love for the ocean, adventure, and the outdoors. Growing up, I spent a lot of time helping my dad with carpentry, washing the car, working in the garden, fishing, and going on adventures. So, becoming a deckhand felt like second nature to me.

I embarked on my yachting journey in 2022, a decision that came with its challenges, especially financially. Entering the male-dominated industry as a deckhand was daunting. I faced skepticism about my strength and femininity. Determined to prove that women can excel in any field, I took on the challenge to inspire others.

I’ve had the privilege of working with three incredible captains so far who have been instrumental in my growth. Through their mentorship, I’ve discovered my strengths, acknowledged my weaknesses, and expanded my capabilities. Initially, I planned to stay in the industry for only a few years, but I quickly developed a deep passion for it. The support from my friends, family, and followers has been unwavering, reinforcing my commitment to this path.

Yachting has enabled me to achieve two of my biggest dreams: traveling the world and scuba diving. Since starting, I’ve visited eight countries and counting. The diverse crews, cultures, races, and ranks I’ve encountered have enriched my experience and broadened my perspective. I’ve formed valuable friendships and learned immensely from everyone I’ve met.

The industry is challenging, revealing both my vulnerabilities and strengths. These experiences have fostered a deep sense of gratitude. Currently, I’m transitioning towards becoming a water-sports instructor and aspiring to take on a lead role. With continuous training and guidance, I’m steadily working towards my goals, progressing day by day.
