Lilé Potgieter

My name is Lilé, and I was born and raised in South Africa. My journey in the maritime industry began as a professional chef and has evolved into a passionate pursuit of becoming a captain.

Alongside my work, I recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Accounting. From an early age, I was drawn to the water, knowing exactly where my passion lay. My first position as a chef on a 71-meter yacht introduced me to this dynamic industry. Since then, I have embraced every opportunity to learn and grow professionally.

My commitment to maritime safety and community service is exemplified by my volunteer work with the National Sea Rescue Institute of South Africa. Through this role, I have saved many lives at sea, including marine life, and acquired invaluable skills that make me an asset to any vessel. I am also dedicated to sharing my knowledge and helping others. I recently published a Yacht Crew Guidebook, which is available for free on my Instagram.

In addition, I am working on a nonprofit initiative aimed at providing yachting opportunities to individuals in poverty, helping them transform their lives and the lives of their families. I am driven by a love for the ocean and a relentless desire to learn and take on new challenges. My job as a deckhand is just one step in my broader aspirations within this industry.
