I began my yachting journey at the end of 2019 after spending over 10 years in the hospital / clinical setting. I was lucky enough to leave Australia to travel overseas to pursue my career in yachting and landed my first Nurse position onboard a high-profile prestigious yacht in the beginning of 2020.
This position had allowed me to utilise my nursing skills and gave me insight into the yachting world. I was able to implement crew training, lead medical drills, and respond effectively and efficiently to emergency situations which occurred onboard. I have been faced with many emergency situations which have included medical evacuations, illness and overall mental health and well-being to crew. I have had nights of being woken in the case of an emergency where I had no hesitation in providing reassurance and high standards of care. Being familiar with medical protocols, medication kits and devices has all allowed me to lead these cases in a calm manner. I hold confidentiality and privacy to the highest standards, and this is of extreme importance to me.
Crew have had the confidence to approach me in all aspects of medical and personal situations and can feel safe and comfortable when needing my care and attention. I have been a sound board for crew with their overall mental health when away from their loved ones. An ear to listen and someone who can be trusted with their concerns. I feel very humbled by this, and it motivates me to be consistent with knowing my crew and knowing when they need me. I have been able to build trust among my peers and this is something that I am enormously proud of.
My goal is to continue to provide an environment where crew feel safe and comfortable when in my care. I constantly check in on my crew members and am readily available for when they are needing me. My compassionate nature is one of my greatest assets and an important part of my nursing.
I am more than thrilled to be nominated for this award and it has motivated me to continue to grow within nursing and yachting by continuing training and education to improve my skills and the outcome for all crew and guests onboard.
