Mike Hitch

I first went to sea in 1983 aged 16. A real “baptism of fire” followed as I travelled the world on general cargo ships, containers ships and eventually, cruise ships. After gaining my OOW, a friend of mine introduced me to the world of yachting in 1989. I started as a Deckhand on a 38m motoroyacht called EMANUEL with just 7 crew. After a couple of years onboard and 3 charter seasons later I was ‘headhunted’ for the new 80m GOLDEN ODYSSEY as 2nd Officer. I ended up staying with the ‘Golden Fleet’ for 29 years, rising to Captain in 1998 and Marine Director in 2002. During my time with the Fleet we built the world’s first support yacht “GOLDEN SHADOW” and delivered the new 123m GOLDEN ODYSSEY in 2015. From 2008 to 2013 I was involved in the Global Reef Expedition with the Living Oceans Foundation, surveying corals reefs around the world. In 2020 I joined the new build team for Project OPUS at Lurssen. I am currently serving as Captain onboard the 142m NORD. I have been incredibly fortunate to be involved in such a great industry for so many years and to have worked with so many amazing people along the way. I am currently involved in mentoring programmes for various organizations so I can help others enjoy the experiences I have had.
