A day in the life of the Slipstream crew…
I walk into the crew mess at 7am and am greeted with a big smile and a cup of tea by one of the stews who knows what time I start my shift today. I make a latte for the captain and glance over at our pet gold fish, Slippers as I make my way upstairs to the Bridge. I find our captain behind his desk in his sheepskin slippers with a chart in front of him, working on a new course for that days destination. “Ayoy there captain!” “Ah bonjour” he might reply if we are in France, or “Bonjourno!” if its Italy. “Anything special planned today Captain?” I ask. “Always!” he replies with a twinkle in his eye. I laugh and make my way through the guest area to the pantry, where I spot our principle guest just walking outside. I pre heat his coffee mug with boiling water, as I know he likes his cappuccinos extra hot and dust a little chocolate on the top. It’s his family’s 14th trip with us this charter. He grins as I bring it out “Morning Tiff!” “Good Morning Ted! How did you sleep?” “Brilliant as always, thanks!” He asks me what’s on the cards for today and I say that our chief officer Nick will be taking them on one of his famous “Nick’s tours” around the island and that whilst they are out, the deck boys are going out in the tender to dive for some fresh lobster for their dinner that night. We are setting up dinner that evening on the swim platform, adorned with fairy lights and lanterns so that the adults can have a more romantic meal, whilst the deck crew entertains the kids in the Skylounge, challenging them on FIFA or in a game of UNO. I discuss tomorrow with him – his daughter’s birthday. Whilst they are out, the team will be setting up a surprise Alice in Wonderland themed High Tea. Our creative and fun chef will prepare a delectable spread of mini everything’s, including pastries and savouries and the interior team will decorate the aft deck with Alice in Wonderland props for a tea party extravaganza, whilst they serve tea in outfits such as Alice, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts. Our deckhand Ben who has a guitar and a beautiful voice, has prepared a special birthday song that he will sing whilst dressed up as the White Rabbit. Singing and dancing with the guests is a common practise for us on Slipstream that we really enjoy! Ted loves this idea and extends his gratitude again for always going above and beyond to make their charters fun and exciting and getting involved with the kids. I remind him that putting “a smile on his dial” is our daily goal and he high 5’s me as I make my way back to the pantry. True story.
