Rafael Cervantes Mataix

My career at sea, started as a dive instructor & commercial diver in my native Mexico. I have a passion for underwater photography and my work has been used and published by the BBC, National geographic and many other books & magazines. I have been a dive instructor for 30 years (ouch!) And been involved in many conservation projects around the world.

Being around boats, sailing from a young age & having the diving experience, my progression to the luxury yacht world was a natural step
I have cruised extensively throughout the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Pacific, Galapagos, Cocos, Malpelo, Central America and the South Pacific for the last 23 years.

In the last few years I have been part of “the bridge” comitte of the ISS, where we aim to create better crew for the industry and beter work conditions and care for the crew. As of recently we have been working on bringing awareness on subjects such as; crew fatigue and mental health onboard yachts.

I strongly believe in the power of a crew working as a cohesive group to get the best experience possible for themselves owners and guests. Mentoring new crew and teaching them how to do the job safely and properly has been one of my endeavors from the beginning of my career.
